Stewart Roberts – Caring Man interview
Masculinity
Stewart Roberts is the founder of Haircuts4Homeless, a community of hairdressers who give cuts to people on the streets. He is one of our caring men of the year for leading the way for a more compassionate society.
What have been your highlights of the year?
We have so many highlights this year. The first was Haircuts4Homeless being featured in the National Lottery TV advert which really catapulted awareness for us.
In May we achieved our registered charity status which takes a lot of work but makes donating to us a lot easier.
Recently we were blessed by the actress Lena Headey becoming our Ambassador and then speaking with me on our upcoming “Hear Me, See Me” podcast.
Most of all, the real highlight at every session is the response we get from our special guests.
What are your plans for 2020?
We have 65 projects across the UK and Ireland and have 25 waiting to open next year so it’s going to be exciting and really busy.
What does caring mean to you?
To me, caring really does start with yourself. I spent so many years with self-loathing and low self esteem that I couldn’t see the good in others.
Going through recovery has made me comfortable with myself and growing self esteem grows my love for others.
Do you have any self-care tips for us?
The biggest thing for self care is communication and helping others. The worst thing when you are low is to isolate yourself, so communication with others is crucial. Also, when I have felt at my lowest and I have gone to one of our sessions I have come out full of gratitude. Helping others really is the antidote for our troubles.
