The North Water style – get the look, not the murderousness
Style
The North Water blew us away in its treatment of the evil that men do. Also, because of the cool mariner clothes!
The North Water, the stunning drama currently on BBC iPlayer with Jack O’Connell and Colin Farrell, is a great many things: a terrifying depiction of remorseless evil. A dissection of morality, and its limits. A study of corruption and exploitation. A travesty of the Hull accent. But it is also a place of profoundly brilliant seafaring gear. Heavy coats, natty caps, braces over chunky knits, and a lovely, lovely pipes.
Here’s a quick buyers guide to get The North Water style (no pipes, sadly, they’ll make you die):
The Modern Submariner - Roll Neck Merino Wool Jumper
Made in Leicestershire and inspired by the handmade wool jumpers worn by seamen 100 years ago - near enough, The North Water is set in 1859 - this 100% merino wool jumper will allow you to keep warm and comfortable while evading amoral killers like Colin Farrell's Henry Drax on board a doomed whaling ship lost in the Arctic. Or, you know, just around town if it's a bit chilly.
£120John Lewis & Partners Diamond Braces, One Size, Navy
To be worn over a chunk knit roll-neck, as per O'Connell's Patrick Sumner...if you can pull this off, well, you must have sailor genes (or be in a very forgiving bar). £20
Universal Works - For Tenue De Nimes Fatigue Pant in Navy
Now these are nice. A Universal Works version of a classic military style with a slightly oversized fit. According to them is has 'thick, heavy, woven 400g twill, intended for hardwearing, with a sueded surface for a soft supple appearance. Twill is a type of textile weave with a pattern of diagonal parallel ribs. Because of this structure, twill generally drapes well and the garments falls elegant and smooth.' Kind of reads like erotic fiction doesn't it? Buy! £139
Jaxon & James Herringbone Army Cap
Love this. 100% cotton with a subtle micro-herringbone pattern, and a matching hat band with metal anchor pins on each side. if you're clean shaven you'll look like John Lennon, if you're bearded you'll look like a whaler. Win-win. Unless being a whaler doesn't always go down well?
£22.95Paul James - Chunky British Wool Ribbed Shooting Jumper
Commando sweater with patches, made from 100% British wool. Everything in the early episodes of The North Water is brown, mostly since those parts feature Hull quite prominently. The clothes are brown too, and this sweater is a dead ringer for one of Patrick Sumner's. To be worn under a very big coat.
GANT Herringbone Overcoat
Although it's a little too man-about-town to be strictly seafarer's wear, it nevertheless has all the oversized cool seen in the show. Christ, it's just a great coat, ok?
Kingsman -Oxford Slim-Fit Prince of Wales Checked Wool Waistcoat
Part of Mr Porter's Kingsmen collection. The Kingsmen films aren't very good, but handily this is exactly the kind of brown waistcoat Patrick Sumner sports while taking laudanum in Hull pubs. £295
KINGSMAN Oxford Cropped Tapered Prince of Wales Checked Wool Suit Trousers
And...the matching trousers. Cropped and tapered for that 'man of the past' feel. Sexy. Probably. £295
BARBOUR MORAR WAX TRAPPER MEN'S HAT
Yeah this is a gem for the depths of winter. This flap style item could be considered a bit nerdish so it'll be vital to grow a big mariner beard and bulk up like Henry Drax to truly pull it off. When you do though, the world will be your blood-splattered oyster. £39.95
THE KOOPLES DOUBLE-BREASTED MILITARY KHAKI TRENCH COAT
Wonderful military item that conjures images of you staring out into sea pondering on deep philosophical questions about the nature of men. Perfect for ferry crossings! £495
