MEAT VOID

Four secret ingredients that make vegans drool

Food

Want to make vegan fried chicken, vegan cookies or vegan pulled pork? Nicola Lando, founder of SousChef reveals the secret vegan ingredients that are revolutionising vegan cuisine and driving the luxe plant-powered revolution...

01

Vegetarian Dashi Stock Powder

Vegetarians and vegans can enjoy the umami-rich flavours of dashi, with this vegetarian dashi powder made from kelp seaweed. Dissolve in boiling water and add miso paste for a comforting and authentic-tasting Japanese miso soup.

02

Organic Jackfruit in Water

Jackfruit is a new meat substitute that, quite literally, grows on trees. Native to India, Jackfruit has the meaty texture of pulled pork. It's gluten and soya free, has a mild flavour, and makes a decent vegan burger.

03

Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

Creamy, smooth coconut oil made from the flesh of organic coconuts through cold-pressing. This brand is unrefined, unbleached and free from nasty trans-fats. Great for curries and vegan cookies. Comes in a spread that returns to a liquid state when heated.

04

Seitan Flour

Seitan, aka ‘wheat meat’, is a popular vegetarian and vegan meat alternative. If you've had the vegan Fried Chicken at Temple of Seitan, you'll know just how tasty it can be. To make your own seitan, just add water to this flour. The best part is that it's endlessly customisable with your favourite herbs and spices. Fancy a pizza?
